What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise system developed by Joseph Pilates and focused on core strengthening, balance and breath control. Pilates exercises are focused on improving balance and flexibility, and a complete Pilates routine practiced throughout pregnancy and beyond can help ensure you stay as healthy as possible and mitigate many of the symptoms associated with pregnancy.

How can Pilates help me while I'm pregnant?

Pilates offers many important benefits to women while they're pregnant, including:

  • stronger core muscles, including the transverse abdominis, an abdominal muscles that plays a critical role in delivery and also provide support for your growing belly during pregnancy

  • prevention of post-partum “pooch” caused by separation of the abdominal muscles, a condition called diastasis recti

  • better control of your breath which can aid in reducing the discomfort of labor and delivery

  • greater control over the pelvic floor muscles, which play an important role in delivery as well as in preventing incontinence; Pilates helps women learn how to contract the muscles more efficiently, as well as how to relax them more completely during delivery

  • prevention of many of the aches and pains associated with pregnancy, including low back pain caused by changes in balance and posture

Can Pilates help me after I have a baby?

Yes, Pilates offers many advantages to women after they give birth, including:

  • faster recovery and restoration of your pre-pregnancy strength following birth

  • better flexibility and spine strength

  • realignment of the joints and the entire body once the pregnancy weight begins to come off

  • whole body conditioning to address the multiple physical issues associated with pregnancy and delivery

Before any Pilates exercise regimen begins, you'll have a consultation appointment to discuss any symptoms you're having as well as your goals and overall health, so your plan can be customized specifically for your needs.

Bebé PT is a participating provider for over 4000 different health plans. Treatments are generally covered with a prescription from your OB/Gyn or any physician.
