What is pelvic pain syndrome?

Pelvic pain syndrome refers to discomfort, aching, pain and feelings of pressure that occur in your pelvic region – the area from your bellybutton down to your groin. Chronic pelvic pain is considered to be pain or discomfort in your pelvic region that persists for six months or more. There are many possible causes of pelvic pain including endometriosis, fibroids, hormonal fluctuations, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and infection, but many cases of chronic pelvic pain syndrome have no identifiable underlying cause. When the cause of pelvic pain cannot be determined, treatment is focused on relieving the painful symptoms.

What are the symptoms of pelvic pain syndrome?

Women who have pelvic pain syndrome can experience many different types of symptoms, including:

  • persistent, steady pain that's often severe

  • dull achiness

  • cramping

  • intermittent pain that fluctuates in intensity over time

  • pressure or feelings of heaviness in the pelvic region

  • pain during intercourse

  • pain when going to the bathroom

  • pain after sitting for long periods of time, such as when sitting at a desk all day at work

Sometimes, symptoms can become worse with long periods of standing, becoming less when lying down. The intensity of the pain can range from mildly irritating to debilitating, interfering with regular routines.

How can Bebé PT help me with my chronic pelvic pain?

Bebé PT practitioners understand the symptoms of pelvic pain syndrome and know how to apply specific techniques to help relieve symptoms so women can lead healthier, more comfortable lives.
