What causes incontinence?

Incontinence can be caused by different factors, but nearly all of them relate to a weakening of the pelvic floor muscles, a set of strong muscles that form supportive bands to hold the bladder, lower bowel, vagina and uterus in their proper positions. The pelvic floor muscles play a primary role in bladder and bowel control; if you've ever stopped a stream of urine in mid-flow, those are your pelvic floor muscles working. When these muscles or the nerves that control them become damaged or weakened, both bladder and bowel leakage can occur.

How does pregnancy contribute to an increased risk for bowel and urinary incontinence?

Both pregnancy and delivery cause significant strain on the pelvic floor muscles, and that can lead to the development of both bowel and urinary incontinence. During pregnancy, the increasing weight of the belly causes increasing pressure on the pelvic floor muscles, especially if your core muscles haven't been properly prepared for the added weight of a growing baby. Over time, this pressure can cause the pelvic floor muscles to weaken, resulting in leakage from the bladder and sometimes the bowel as well. During delivery, the strain exerted during pushing the baby from your uterus can exacerbate these problems, and even if you haven't experienced incontinence during pregnancy, you may still develop symptoms later as a result of damage that can occur during delivery.

How can Bebé PT help me decrease my risks for developing incontinence during pregnancy and after giving birth?

Bebé PT is focused on the needs of expectant and new mothers, offering strengthening exercises that prevent injury and reduce the risk of becoming incontinent. Exercises can be performed during pregnancy and afterward to help restore weak or stretched-out muscles, and both individual sessions and group classes are available.
